Pediatric Eye Exams

Clear vision plays an important role in a child’s learning, development, confidence, and daily activities. From reading and schoolwork to sports, screen use, and play, children rely on their vision throughout the day.

At InnoVision Optometry, we provide pediatric eye exams to evaluate your child’s vision, eye health, focusing ability, eye coordination, and overall visual development. Our goal is to detect concerns early, explain our findings clearly, and help your child receive the care they need to see and function their best.

Why Children Need Eye Exams

Children do not always know when their vision is blurry or when their eyes are not working together properly. Some children assume everyone sees the way they do, while others may adapt by sitting closer, avoiding reading, or losing focus during visually demanding tasks.

A pediatric eye exam can help identify concerns such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, eye focusing problems, eye teaming difficulties, amblyopia, commonly known as lazy eye, strabismus, commonly known as eye turn, and signs of eye health problems.

Early detection is important because many childhood vision problems are easier to manage when found sooner.

When Should Children Have an Eye Exam?

Children should have their eyes checked regularly as they grow. In general, comprehensive eye exams are recommended during infancy, preschool years, and throughout the school years.

A child’s first comprehensive eye exam is commonly recommended between 6 and 12 months of age. Another eye exam is recommended between ages 3 and 5, followed by regular exams once the child enters school.

Children who wear glasses, have worsening vision, have a family history of eye conditions, were born prematurely, have developmental concerns, or show symptoms of a vision problem may need to be seen more often. Dr. Su will recommend an exam schedule based on your child’s individual needs.

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

Parents may notice signs such as:

  • Squinting
  • Sitting too close to the TV or board
  • Holding books, tablets, or phones very close
  • Frequent headaches or eye strain
  • Rubbing the eyes often
  • Avoiding reading or near work
  • Losing place while reading
  • Short attention span with schoolwork
  • Tilting or turning the head to see
  • One eye turning in or out
  • Complaints of blurry or double vision
  • Frequent changes in glasses prescription

Even if your child does not complain, an eye exam can still be important. Some vision problems are not obvious without a comprehensive evaluation.

School Vision Screenings Are Not the Same as Eye Exams

School vision screenings can be helpful, but they are limited. Many screenings focus mainly on distance vision and may miss other important issues such as eye focusing, eye coordination, eye health problems, or early signs of myopia progression.

A comprehensive pediatric eye exam provides a more complete picture of your child’s vision and eye health. If your child passed a school screening but is still struggling with reading, headaches, attention, or blurry vision, an eye exam is still recommended.

Pediatric Myopia and Nearsightedness

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common in children. Children with myopia can usually see up close but have trouble seeing far away, such as the board at school or signs in the distance.

If your child’s prescription keeps getting stronger, Dr. Su may discuss myopia management options designed to help slow progression. Early treatment may help reduce the risk of higher myopia later in life.

At InnoVision Optometry, we offer personalized myopia management options, including Stellest® lenses, MiSight® 1 day contact lenses, Ortho-K, and low-dose atropine therapy when appropriate.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam

During your child’s exam, Dr. Su will evaluate visual clarity, eye alignment, focusing ability, eye movement, depth perception, prescription needs, and overall eye health. The exam is adjusted based on your child’s age, comfort level, and ability to respond.

Our team works to make the visit comfortable and positive for both children and parents. We take the time to explain findings clearly and answer questions so you understand your child’s vision and next steps.
