Ortho-K, also known as orthokeratology, is a non-surgical vision correction option that uses custom overnight contact lenses to gently reshape the front surface of the eye while you sleep. After removing the lenses in the morning, many patients can enjoy clear daytime vision without wearing glasses or daytime contact lenses.

What Is Ortho-K?

Ortho-K lenses are specially designed rigid gas permeable contact lenses worn overnight. While you sleep, the lenses temporarily reshape the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye. This helps light focus more accurately on the retina and can provide clearer vision during the day.

​​​​​​​Ortho-K is reversible and non-surgical. To maintain the effect, the lenses must be worn on the schedule recommended by Dr. Su. If lens wear is stopped, the eyes gradually return toward their original shape and the prescription effect fades.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ortho-K?

Ortho-K may be a good option for patients who:

Ortho-K for Myopia Management

Because every child’s eyes and lifestyle are different, Dr. Su will evaluate your child’s prescription, corneal shape, eye health, age, visual needs, and risk factors before recommending whether Ortho-K is appropriate.

What to Expect During the Ortho-K Process

Ortho-K requires a detailed evaluation and careful follow-up. During the fitting process, Dr. Su will take precise measurements of the cornea and assess the overall health of the eyes. These measurements help design custom lenses that fit safely and effectively.

After your lenses are dispensed, you will return for follow-up visits so Dr. Su can monitor your vision, lens fit, corneal health, and treatment progress. Some patients notice improvement after the first night, while others may take several days to weeks to reach their best vision.

Is Ortho-K Safe?

Ortho-K is a well-established treatment option when lenses are properly fitted, cleaned, and monitored. Like any contact lens worn overnight, it does require responsible lens care and regular follow-up visits.

To reduce the risk of complications, it is important to wash your hands before handling lenses, clean and store lenses properly, avoid exposing lenses to water, and follow the wearing schedule recommended by your doctor.
