Comprehensive Eye Exam

A vision screening can tell you whether you can see clearly at a distance, but it does not give the full picture of your eye health. At InnoVision Optometry, our comprehensive eye exams go beyond checking your glasses prescription. We evaluate how well your eyes work together, look for signs of eye disease, and provide personalized recommendations to help protect your vision for years to come.

Vision Screening vs. Comprehensive Eye Exam

Vision screenings are often performed at schools, health fairs, work physicals, or driver’s license exams. While they can be helpful for identifying obvious vision problems, they are limited. Most screenings only measure distance vision and do not evaluate important parts of eye health, such as the retina, optic nerve, eye pressure, focusing ability, eye coordination, or early signs of eye disease.

A comprehensive eye exam provides a much more complete evaluation. During your visit, we check your visual clarity, prescription, eye focusing, eye teaming, peripheral vision, eye pressure, and overall eye health. We also review your medical history, medications, family history, screen use, and lifestyle factors that may affect your eyes.

What We Check During Your Eye Exam

Your comprehensive eye exam may include:

Visual Acuity and Prescription Testing

We measure how clearly you see and determine whether glasses or contact lenses can improve your vision.

Eye Health Evaluation

We examine the front and back of the eyes to look for signs of conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and retinal problems.

Retinal Imaging or Dilation

Using advanced technology such as Optomap retinal imaging, we can evaluate the health of your retina and document important findings. When needed, dilation may also be recommended for a more complete internal eye health evaluation.

Eye Pressure Testing

We check the pressure inside your eyes as part of glaucoma screening.

Visual Function Testing

We evaluate how your eyes focus, move, and work together, which can affect reading, computer use, depth perception, and overall visual comfort.

Why Routine Eye Exams Matter

Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. A comprehensive eye exam allows your optometrist to detect potential problems earlier, monitor changes over time, and recommend treatment when needed.

Eye exams are also an important part of your overall healthcare. Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, and certain medications can affect the eyes. By understanding your health history and examining the eyes carefully, we can help identify concerns that may otherwise go unnoticed.

How Often Should You Have an Eye Exam?

For many adults, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended every 1 to 2 years depending on age, symptoms, contact lens wear, medical history, family history, and risk factors. Children, seniors, contact lens wearers, and patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, eye disease, or vision changes may need exams more often.

At InnoVision Optometry, Dr. Steven Su will recommend an exam schedule based on your individual eye health and vision needs.
